Community Service Opportunities

All Lee Honors College students are required to complete 20 volunteer hours each year. Why wait until the last minute to complete yours? New opportunities are typically posted each week. Here are some current needs that you might be able to fill.


Tutor Time!
Tutor Time is a service project run by the 2011 Medallions. They work with elementary students from Kalamazoo Public Schools with homework and reading help. Tutor Time is located at the Evergreen South Apartment Complex and runs Monday through Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m. They are looking for students who are able to tutor on Mondays or Wednesdays. 2015 Science Olympiad
Saturday, March 28
Volunteers are needed to help with the Science Olympiad competition for middle and high school students, which will be held on WMU’s campus. Michigan Libertarian Party
Not interested in politics as usual? Volunteer for the Michigan Libertarian Party! Make calls to potential volunteers and supporters, hand out literature on the Libertarian Party and its candidates, work on data entry or highlight your unique skills and areas of interest in other ways and gain experience working outside the two party box! Kalamazoo Juvenile Drug Treatment Court
Interested in helping adolescents with substance use problems? The Kalamazoo Juvenile Drug Treatment Court is looking for volunteers who are interested in making a difference in the lives of youth in the Kalamazoo area. Volunteers will be asked to serve as positive role models, and are needed for help with after school educational support, mentoring and leadership. Data entry for the Michigan Butterfly Network
Earn volunteer hours by taking data from butterfly survey sheets of past years and entering butterfly counts into a new online interface called PollardBase. Contact Kyle Bibby at if you are interested.

Read and Write Kalamazoo (RAWK) is looking for volunteers (preferably in English and/or in English fields) to volunteer to help nurture reading and writing skills of students from preschool through twelfth grade. Volunteers are needed to help at monthly Saturday workshops as well as more long-term workshops facilitated in schools. Click here and contact Emily Kastner to sign up.

Broncos For Heroes
Broncos for Heroes is a WMU RSO that focuses on sending care packages to deployed service men and women in order to show them our support for the sacrifices they make for our country. Volunteers can help by working donation tables, passing out flyers, planning, organizing and creating care packages. Click here to volunteer. For more information contact: Ryan Kohsel at

Invisible Need Project
Volunteers needed throughout the school year to help with stocking, sorting and keeping inventory current at The Invisible Need Project’s food pantry located in Ackley Hall. The Invisible Need Project is a multi-faceted initiative intended to serve students with unmet needs, while building a WMU culture of giving. The Bronco Study Zone
Volunteers will gain experience tutoring, mentoring, coaching and/or supervising students who have required study hours or who want to develop good study habits. Volunteers will provide these services in the new Bronco Study Zone on the second floor in Waldo Library.
